A new paper reviewed here, reveals that with careful protection measures, particularly from collisions with ships, the California blue whale population has recovered well after it was once decimated by commercial whaling. This is good news for blue whales worldwide and calls for strong conservation measures to be applied elsewhere, like Chile.
It is not sufficient to simply declare Chilean waters a whale 'Sanctuary', which prohibits whaling even though whaling in Chile hasn't been carried out since circa 1985. But rather it is necessary to develop management measures like the planning of shipping lanes, to protect blue whale habitat and reduce ship strikes.
